The biggest mistakes new and established business owners make
The mistakes are different at each stage, but they come from the same place: avoiding the decision in front of you.
New owners tend to undercharge, say yes to everything, and build the business around whoever walks through the door. It is understandable — early revenue feels like survival. The cost is that you end up with a business shaped by other people's requests rather than your own intent.
Established owners make the opposite mistake. They keep doing what worked five years ago long after conditions changed: the same prices, the same service mix, the same processes that were designed for a smaller company.
Both groups share one habit — postponing decisions that feel uncomfortable. The underperforming hire, the customer who drains the team, the pricing conversation. Delay rarely improves the outcome.
The practical fix is a standing appointment with yourself, monthly, where the only agenda item is the decision you have been avoiding. Most owners already know what it is.
